"Never forget the roots of your family"
A little serious of our mind:
Try to imagine, that your grandchildren can´t speak with you in your language......
Learn your family the language of the roots, so your family - children can speak their language from childhood!
Learn your family the culture of the roots, so your family understand and respect the roots e.g. Mano Po!

Manobo Udol Dance The Manobo / Manuvu are a large group of Austronesian people from Mindanao. This is the Udol dance, named after the slit drum that accompanies it. The mesmering rhythm of the udol is believed to call the spirits of the deceased (fallen warriors) to show them (the dancers/performers) where their remains are so they could bring them home and have a decent burial. (daghang salamat SaiaoPinoi) The dancers provide the Udol, Utomay and the Patawagay rhythms themselves as they take turns to dance. This film was taken by anthropologist Robert Garfias in the 1960s. |

Zamboanga 1936 - Early Film art - LOOK the film which
tells the story of the past ubeIceCreamCone wrote on Jul 5, 2009: "Zamboanga" was directed by my grandfather, Marvin Gardner in his native Philippines in 1936. His screen name was Eduardo De Castro. Thought lost forever, it was found in 2003? by Philippine filmmaker Nick de Ocampo at the US Library of Congress. (The copy came from Finland, hence the subtitles.) It stars Fernando Poe, Sr., the father of Fernando Poe, Jr., Philippine actor and presidential candidate. It is the oldest Filipino feature film known to exist. "Zamboanga" came at a crucial moment in the history of filmmaking in the Philippines. It showed the picturesque sea and the captivating landscape and with warring tribes and a kidnapped maiden to hook the audience’s attention," Deocampo reveals. Badjao 1957 A story about the Badjaos and the Tausogs, rival Muslim tribes for centuries. The Badjaos, a group of sea gypsies, ply the sea for food and for pearls. Hassan (Tony Santos), a son of the Badjao chief falls in love and marries Bala Amai (Rosa Rosal) who is a niece of Datu Tahil (Jose de Cordova), head of the Tausogs. At the urging of Bala Amai, Hassan decides to leave his tribe and join the Tausogs. Eventually, Datu Tahil learns of Hassan's expertise in finding rare pearls in the sea, thus exploiting him for his own selfish interests. Hassan and Bala Amai resist him, feeling that their self-respect have been trampled on. They decide to go back to the Badjaos and lead a more humble, but nevertheless peaceful life. The Badjaos accept them with all their hearts. An LVN classic film, largely because of shining performances by Rosa Rosal and Tony Santos. It won the award for best direction (Lamberto V. Avellana, National Artist for Theater and Film in 1976), best story (Rolf Bayer), best editing (Gregorio Carballo), and best cinematography (Mike Accion) at the 1957 Southeast Asia Film Festival held in Tokyo. |

Sea Gypsies Losing Out In the waters around the Philippines
nomadic fisherfolk anchor their houseboats close together at night -
some small protection against the pirates who rule the Sulu Sea. Life on
the ocean spells fear, violence and hunger for the Philippines Sea
Gypsies - the Badjao. They are caught between discrimination on the
mainland and hardship at sea. Adding to their problems, dynamite and
trawler fishing have devastated life on the coral reefs around the
Philippines. Many Badjao can hardly catch enough fish to make a meal or
buy diesel for their boats. This minority's culture and even existence
hangs in the balance. Look many more videos about Badjao HERE |

Photographs of Negrito people. Under the American occupation of the Philippines, and while mainstream Hispanic Filipinos were being exterminated by the million, the American eye felt inclined to portray the peoples who gave an impression of rusticity and wilderness in remote, non-Malay, not deeply Hispanized areas of the Philippines, both justifying their uplifting aims and the wonder and consent of Americans at home. Photos from Dean C. Worcester's collection [University of Michigan digital collections], taken in 1901. Dean Conant Worcester, D.Sc., F.R.G.S. (October 1, 1866 - 1924) was an American zoologist, public official, and authority on the Philippines, born at Thetford, Vermont, and educated at the University of Michigan (A.B., 1889). From 1899 to 1901 he was a member of the United States Philippine Commission; thenceforth until 1913 he served as secretary of the Interior for the Philippine Insular Government. Banaue Rice
Terraces Declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 and dubbed as the "Eight Wonder of the World," the 2,000-year-old terraces manifest the engineering skill and ingenuity of the sturdy Ifugao people, who with bare hands carved this stair-like monument out of the Cordillera mountainside. |

Banayoyo people Long time ago the Tingguian and Igorot tribes intermarried and it did not take long enough they formed another tribe. However, both tribes had different dialects. Thus, the result of the intermarriage resulted to one dialect derived from the “Tingguian of Abra” and “Igorot of Cordillera” - born the “Itneg” of the newly formed tribe. |

Oral & Intangible Heritage - The Darangen -
Kapagondoga - Central of Maranao. Kapagondoga. An excerpt from the Darangen. Chanted by Madame Limpasunang Dagalangit Lomala of Minitupad. The Darangen's origins are placed around the 7th century, and the chant narrates historic accounts, myths and legends, as well as themes of customary law (adat), traditional politics, love, courtship and manners central to the Maranao. Originally incorporating indigenous as well as Hindu-Buddhist elements, the content of the Darangen also came to incorporate several Islamic themes by the 14th century. The epic itself can only be chanted by Onor (master artists) who were trained in proper technique and etiquette of singing in the ancient language of the Maranao court, and have committed the whole epic to memory. The Darangen consists of 17 cycles and around 73,000 verses, and was transcribed into 3 volumes. It has been designated as one of 43 Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This film was originally released by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) of the Philippines in 2005. Look also HERE |

Healing Ethnic Ritual of
Mandadawak The existence of primitive ethnic doctors here in Balbalan, popularly known by them as "mandadawak" is a living testimony that Balbalan tribes were once headhunters. Mandadawak play vital role then in the glorification of tribal warriors. To these days mandadawak are active and still occupies a high ladder in the leadership of the tribes of Balbalan not anymore for her services to headhunters but for those who are affected with illness that could no longer be cured in hospitals. They also performed other customary rituals such as ethnic baptismal, customary weddings, honoring the dead, thanksgiving, among others. This video portrays one of the mandadawak of the tribe of Balbalan in "curing" illnesses. The mandadawak has to, first of all, call the attention of a spirit to help her cure the disease. Following scenes were the acts of mandadawak appeasing the spirit to give her power over the other spirit who cause the sickness of her subject. The last scenes were the act of mandadawak portraying that she already captured the devil spirit using her body as the medium. The mandadawak was joined by relatives and neighbors of the ill-infected subject giving some donations probably for the services of the mandadawak. This video was captured during a stage presentation about mandadawak during the centennial year celebration of Balbalan. |
