Learn your family the language of the roots, so your family - children can speak their language from childhood!

Learn your family the culture of the roots, so your family understand and respect the roots e.g. Mano Po!

Celebration of Death A Celebration of Death Among the Filipino
Pasiyam and forty days of prayer for the dead

The traditions to offer novena prayers at the home of the departed that ends with a simple meal. Both of them are reckoned from the day of the death of the loved one though some places people set it from the day of the first mass said for the soul of the dearly departed. The "ritual" simply consists of regular formulaic prayer, novena for the dead and several litanies that can be recited from memory by the "prayer warriors" probably due to almost everyday usage.

Death curse Mamanwa tribe

Ya barang / Sorcery: Death curse

The lakeshore town of Paete in the province of Laguna is famed for its wood carving industry. During the Semana Santa or Holy Week, the spectacular jointed image of the Santo Sepulcro undergoes a unique ritual, the Pagsusuob, that can only be said as a pre-hispanic rite of the dead that is more closely identified now with the mummification rituals of high ranking citizens in some remote areas in the Cordillera region.

Burial - Igorot

Culture and tradition in burying the dead differ in every Filipino group especially the minorities like the Igorots. The Igorot tribe has a distinctive way of burying their dead but is now diminishing due to the influence of modern ways of living and only a few can still remember how their forefathers do the ritual.

Manobo Udol Dance

The Manobo / Manuvu are a large group of Austronesian people from Mindanao. This is the Udol dance, named after the slit drum that accompanies it. The mesmering rhythm of the udol is believed to call the spirits of the deceased (fallen warriors) to show them (the dancers/performers) where their remains are so they could bring them home and have a decent burial. (daghang salamat SaiaoPinoi) The dancers provide the Udol, Utomay and the Patawagay rhythms themselves as they take turns to dance. This film was taken by anthropologist Robert Garfias in the 1960s.

The mummies of Kabayan

part 2 by/akosilolo

After 28 years, we returned to Kabayan for another exciting journey into the past watch my first Kabayan clip here above. This time we went up the mountain to discover the Timbac cave. The mummies you see in this video are more than 500 years old and were preserved by the Ibaloi tribe. I would like to thank our guides, who were so helpful. Without them this video couldn't have been realized! Finally I would like to mention that we followed all the rules and customs. The Benguet Province and particularly Kabayan is such a nice place with old traditions and friendly people. Let's keep such wonderful places as they are. Philippines...mahal kita! Three I left out because of time constraints
- Turn the plate around when someone leaves the table to prevent a car accident.
- Don't face your bed towards the door or closet or you will die early, as a casket goes out the door. Either that, or the evil spirits will pull you out.
- If you put your face in a weird position, it will stay like that forever.
